Autism Resources and Support for Tamariki and Whanau — Nelson Tasman, New Zealand
Free advice, local support, and a pathway through diagnosis. You do not have to figure this out alone.
At Miharo Ora, we work alongside whanau every day — and we know how overwhelming it can be to navigate the autism support system, especially at the beginning. This page brings together the most trusted and practical autism resources available to families of autistic and neurodiverse tamariki in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a particular focus on the Nelson Tasman region. Whether you are seeking an autism diagnosis, looking for WINZ or NASC funding support, or simply trying to understand your child's needs, this page is for you.
Miharo Ora also offers its own free support and referral service to help whanau find the right pathway — diagnosis, funding, school support, and local services. Get in touch with our team — we are happy to talk things through with you and walk alongside you on this journey.
Understanding Autism in New Zealand
Autism — also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) — is a lifelong neurological difference that affects how a person experiences and interacts with the world. It is not an illness or something to be fixed. It is a different way of thinking, sensing, communicating, and being.
No two autistic people are the same. Autism presents differently in every individual. Early understanding, the right environment, and genuine support can make a profound difference for autistic tamariki and the whanau who love them. At Miharo Ora, we believe in neurodiversity-affirming practice — celebrating each child's brain and creating a space where they can truly let their rainbow shine.
Getting an Autism Diagnosis in New Zealand — Step by Step
A formal diagnosis is not required for your child to attend Miharo Ora or to access many support services — but for many whanau, it opens doors to NASC funding, school support, and specialist services. Here is how the process typically works in Aotearoa.
1. Start with Your GP or Plunket Nurse
If you have concerns about your child's development, your first step is to speak with your GP (family doctor) or Plunket nurse. Share your observations clearly and ask for a referral to a developmental paediatrician or a specialist assessment service. Do not wait if you have a gut feeling — early referral is always better.
2. Developmental Paediatrician or Specialist Assessment
Your GP can refer your child to a paediatrician through the public health system (via Health New Zealand) or to a private specialist. Assessment typically involves observations, parent interviews, standardised assessment tools, and input from your child's school. Waitlists for public assessment can be long — ask your GP about all available pathways, including community-based providers.
3. Receiving the Autism Diagnosis
A diagnosis is given by a qualified specialist — usually a paediatrician, psychologist, or psychiatrist. Once confirmed, you will receive a written report. Keep copies — you will need it when accessing NASC funding, school support, and specialist services.
4. After Diagnosis — What Comes Next
A diagnosis is a beginning, not an end. After diagnosis you can begin accessing Whaikaha disability support funding, apply for Ministry of Education learning assistance, request a NASC Needs Assessment, and connect with specialist providers. The sections below guide you through each step.
NASC Needs Assessment and Disability Funding in Nelson Tasman
One of the most important steps after an autism diagnosis is accessing a Needs Assessment through your local NASC (Needs Assessment and Service Coordination) agency. This is a free process that determines what funded supports your child and whanau are eligible for.
What Is a NASC?
NASC agencies are funded by Whaikaha — Ministry of Disabled People — to assess the support needs of disabled people and connect them with funded services. You do not need a referral to contact your local NASC — you can self-refer directly.
